Chapter 3 · Private Education in Latin America: An Analysis

35% of households can afford private school. Only 10% enroll.

Mexico has more families who can afford private school than families who are paying for it. That gap is the growth ceiling for the entire sector.

13.4 million households can afford private school, yet only 10% of enrollment is private

AMAI’s NSE Rule, Mexico’s standard socioeconomic classification, sorts the country’s ~38 million households into seven socioeconomic levels. The top three are private school’s natural territory: A/B, 2.1 million households earning over $120,000MXN a month; C+, 5 million at ~$48,000MXN; C, 6.3 million at ~$28,000MXN. Combined: 13.4 million households, 35% of the country, able to sustain monthly tuition from $2,800MXN to over $12,000MXN.

And yet only 10% of national enrollment is in private school. Read that again: there are more families who can pay than families who are paying. Every family that crosses from public to private isn’t a student you took from the school across the street: it’s brand-new demand that didn’t exist for anyone.

“People just can’t afford it.” Are you sure? Or has no one given them a reason to pay you?
