Mexico doesn’t have 45,000 private schools: it has ~20,000 campuses averaging 260 students
Official statistics report roughly 45,000 private basic-education schools in Mexico. The figure is inflated for a technical reason every owner knows: each level gets its own Clave de Centro de Trabajo (official school registration code), so a school with preschool, primary and middle school shows up three times. Corrected, the real universe is ~20,000 campuses with ~5.2 million students: 260 per school, the second-highest average in the region.
This isn’t a little school scraping by: it’s a 260-family operation with a professional payroll and two or three levels running in parallel. And that last phrase hides what almost no one names: two or three levels mean two or three simultaneous enrollment processes, which at most schools are handled by the same person who answers the phone and helps collect tuition.
