Chapter 3 · Private Education in Latin America: An Analysis

Peru: 10% can pay, 26% enroll.

When a family believes their children’s education is worth it, they find a way to pay. The question was never whether they can. It’s who they pay.

Peru: 10% of households can pay and 26% go private. Mexico: 35% can pay, 10% enroll

In Peru, levels A and B make up just 10.4% of households, with incomes far below their Mexican equivalents. Even so, 26% of Peruvian students attend private school, because level C and even level D families pay monthly fees of S/300 to S/600 for a reason no income survey captures: they decided public school wasn’t an option for their children, and adjusted everything else.

Mexico: 35% can pay, 10% enroll. Peru’s lesson is brutal and liberating at once: when a family believes their children’s education is worth it, they find a way to pay. The question was never whether they can. It’s who they pay, and why you rather than someone else.

If a middle-income family asks you “why should we pay?”, does your school have the answer in one sentence?
