8 in 10 third-year middle school students did not reach the expected learning outcomes
The last known national evaluation, Mejoredu’s 2024–2025 school year assessment, found that 8 in 10 third-year middle school students (ninth grade) did not reach the expected learning outcomes. It was never officially published: it leaked to the press in October 2025, shortly before the agency was abolished.
The World Bank estimates that the pandemic added a lag equivalent to two years of schooling: the average middle school graduate today knows what a first-year middle school student used to know. That is the real starting point for most children in the country, and the yardstick against which a family compares any school.
What would you do if you found out your child was two years behind and no one told you?
