Chapter 1 · The Reality of Public Education in Mexico

The average teacher earns less than minimum wage.

Low pay, no training, no evaluation. Teacher demotivation is not a flaw of the profession: it is the rational response to those incentives.

The average Mexican teacher earns $7,890MXN a month: less than minimum wage

Average monthly income of a teacher in Mexico: $7,890MXN. The 2025 minimum wage: $8,400MXN. A preschool teacher averages $6,430MXN; a high school teacher, $6,260MXN. Since 2019 no one has checked whether the person in front of the class is qualified, and training is sporadic, with no follow-up. The system’s message to its teachers is consistent: low pay, no training, no evaluation. The teacher is not the villain of this story. The teacher is its second victim.

What results would you expect from any profession with that package?
